Ford Bids Farewell to UK’s Best-Selling Car as Final Ford Fiestas Roll off the Assembly Line

Ford concludes production of the iconic Ford Fiesta, the UK’s best-selling car, as the final two models are retained for heritage and electric future, marking a significant shift for the company.

The iconic Ford Fiesta, the best-selling car in the UK, is bidding farewell as the final two models roll off the assembly line today.

Ford has decided to keep these last Fiestas for themselves, with one retained in Germany and the other joining their UK heritage collection.

Transitioning to an Electric Future

Ford’s decision to cease production of the Fiesta in Cologne, Germany, marks a significant shift for the company as it rapidly moves toward an electric future.

In a statement, Ford in Europe stated, “Production of the Fiesta in Cologne, Germany, will be discontinued on July 7, and a new era at the Cologne Electric Vehicle Centre will begin.”

A Series of Farewells

The end of Fiesta production follows Ford’s previous discontinuations of the Mondeo in 2021 and the S-Maxx and Galaxy people carriers earlier this year.

Additionally, the output of the Ford Focus will end in 2025. These changes align with the UK’s plan to ban the sale of new petrol and diesel cars and vans by 2030.

Shift Towards Electrification

Erin Baker, editorial director at Auto Trader, an online vehicle marketplace, believes that the end of the Ford Fiesta is a sign of what lies ahead as the automotive industry moves toward electrification and the 2030 cut-off.

Baker explains that the profitability of small, affordable cars like the Fiesta is diminishing, making them less viable for manufacturers.

She acknowledges the disappointment many may feel about the Fiesta’s departure, given its iconic status and tremendous success.

Future Prospects in the Used Car Market

Despite the end of production, the Ford Fiesta remains in high demand in the used car market.

Alex Buttle, co-founder of Motorway, a used car marketplace, notes that dealers are eager to stock their forecourts with this modern-day classic.

The average sold price of Ford Fiestas has even increased by 14% in recent months, highlighting the ongoing popularity of this timeless model.

Although new Fiestas will no longer be available, the used car market will continue to breathe life into this sought-after car for years.

A Fond Farewell to an Icon

The discontinuation of the Ford Fiesta’s production signifies the end of an era.

However, with over 13,000 Fiestas currently advertised on the second-hand market, ranging from affordable options to higher-priced models, it’s clear that these iconic cars will still grace the roads for the foreseeable future.
