Anti Abortion Push Gains Momentum in Russia Amid Growing Conservatism

Explore the unfolding developments in Russia’s abortion laws as public outcry and activist resistance meet tighter restrictions and growing conservatism.

Tallinn, Estonia – A wave of anti-abortion sentiment seems sweeping across Russia as local lawmakers try to impose tighter restrictions on abortion access.

In a surprising turn of events, about 60 people in Russia’s westernmost city, Kaliningrad, are gathered in a bookstore to openly express their discontent over a proposal to ban abortions in local private clinics despite the country’s stifling political atmosphere.

Public Outcry and Surprising Turnouts

The hastily organized meeting showed a notable turnout, signaling the public’s strong feelings.

Organizer Dasha Yakovleva from the Feminitive Community women’s group found the public’s response both surprising and heartening, especially considering the recent crackdowns on political activism under President Vladimir Putin’s regime.

Here, it was a public place, well-known in Kaliningrad, and everyone spoke out openly about how they see this measure, why they think it is unjustified, inappropriate,” Yakovleva mentioned.

Attempts to Erode Abortion Rights

Although abortion remains legal in Russia, there are signs that access to this essential service is gradually being eroded.

Similar to patterns seen in the United States, Russia is experiencing a tightening of abortion laws and access, stirring up discomfort and resistance among citizens.

Activists are responding by encouraging the public to lodge official complaints, sign online petitions, and even participate in small-scale protests.

Historical Shifts in Abortion Policies

Historically, Russia, during the Soviet era, saw women undergoing multiple abortions due to limited access to contraceptives.

However, post the USSR collapse, there was a concerted effort to promote family planning and birth control, resulting in a decline in abortion rates.

However, the times seem to change again under Putin’s rule, marked by his strong alliance with the Russian Orthodox Church and a push for “traditional values.”

Putin’s administration seems keen on enhancing population growth, often condemning women for prioritizing education and career over childbirth.

New Restrictions Looming

There is a looming shadow of further restrictions by introducing more cumbersome processes such as waiting periods and mandatory consultations to discourage abortions.

Health authorities have even introduced online questionnaires, offering women state support if they decide against abortion.

Private clinics are under pressure, with looming bans that could see abortion services being pulled from these facilities.

This has led activists to stockpile emergency contraceptives, anticipating possible shortages due to increased regulations and bureaucracy.

A Resilient Public Pushback

Despite the restrictive measures, the public seems resilient, with activists and ordinary citizens pushing back against the restrictions.

Online petitions garner significant support, showing a collective discontent and a desire to protect abortion rights.

“The pressure on women will be growing even in the absence of a total ban,” says Lina Zharin, a Kaliningrad psychotherapist and activist.

Conclusion: An Ongoing Battle

As the battle over abortion rights continues, the essence of the debate seems to hinge on the prevention of unwanted pregnancies through proper education and the availability of contraceptives.

With the public’s outcry becoming louder, how authorities will navigate these turbulent waters moving forward remains to be seen.
