Ukrainian tennis player Elina Svitolina returned triumphantly to the Grand Slam stage after her pregnancy.
The 28-year-old, who had reached the quarter-finals at Roland-Garros in 2015 and 2020, secured a convincing victory in her first-round match against the 24th-ranked Italian Martina Trevisan.
Svitolina’s victory came in straight sets, with a score of 6-2, 6-2, and the match lasted less than an hour and fifteen minutes.
This successful comeback marks a significant milestone for Elina Svitolina, who had recently faced a decline in her rankings.
Despite her impressive career achievements, including winning the 2018 Masters and five WTA 1000 titles, Svitolina experienced a significant drop in rankings after taking a break from tennis.
In 2017, she reached her highest ranking of third place but lost more than 150 places in a year due to her absence from the sport.
Last year, Svitolina decided to take a break from tennis for several months due to her pregnancy.
In October, she and her husband, Gaël Monfils, welcomed their child.
Additionally, Svitolina faced mental fatigue caused by Russia’s invasion of her country, Ukraine.
During this extended break from the sport, she fell to the 510th in the rankings.
However, upon her return to competition in March, she quickly climbed back up the rankings and currently holds the 192nd position.
Svitolina’s victory in the first round of Roland-Garros is a promising start to her comeback journey.
